Centre clears ₹19,744-crore Green Hydrogen Mission

 


The National Green Hydrogen Mission, with a budget of $19,744 billion, was approved by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday with the goal of making India a major exporter in the industry and a hub for the production, use, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

The development will help India, one of the world's biggest greenhouse gas emitters, achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.
Anurag Thakur, a Union Minister, informed media of the Cabinet's decision by saying, "The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission."

The mission's baseline budget remains at 19,744 crore. The government has allotted 17,490 crore out of this sum for the SIGHT programme, 1,466 crore for prospective pilot projects, 400 crore for R&D, and 388 crore for other mission-related components.

According to Thakur, the government aims to invest an estimated $8 lakh crore in the green hydrogen industry.
According to the minister, the incentive intends to lower the price of green hydrogen over the following five years and make it more accessible.

The MNRE, or Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, will create the program's implementation guidelines.
The main objective of the government is to develop a green hydrogen capacity of at least 5 MMT (million metric tonnes) per annum. The Union government also expects creation of more than 6 lakh jobs in the sector.

In line with our Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets the government is looking at reducing 50 MMT of annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

According to the government, there are many benefits of the National Green Hydrogen Mission including the creation of export opportunities for green hydrogen and its derivatives, decarbonization of industrial, mobility, and energy sectors, reduction in dependence on imported fossil fuels and feedstock, development of indigenous manufacturing capabilities, development of cutting edge technology and creation of employment opportunities in the energy sector.

Companies including Reliance Industries, Indian Oil, NTPC, Adani Enterprises, JSW Energy, Renew Power and Acme Solar have huge plans on green hydrogen
